The enormous city of Beijing is a beguiling mix of the new and young China with its rich cultural heritage, whilst also the showpiece of Mao’s Communist regime. The capital of the People’s Republic of China has reclaimed the mantle it once wore as Peking, seat of the Last Emperor and his predecessors.

Today’s highlights also include the futuristic architecture of the showpiece projects commissioned for the 2008 Olympic Games: as one observer puts it, a kind of coming-out party to mark China’s return to historical greatness.

Sightseeing around Beijing became a whole lot easier after the Olympics. A new metro system was built and despite being crowded at peak periods is surprisingly easy to use. The ticket kiosks are touch screen and one can select your own language. Signage is easy to follow and on board the train there are English translations.

Their on-board system that allows you to know which station you have come to and how many are left to your destination should be copied by other metro systems around the world!

Try to avoid peak times as the x-ray scanning of bags sure slows things up!!!

The Great Wall of China

The Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the best-preserved and best-known Great Wall sections. Compared with the better-known Badaling section, the section at Mutianyu is less crowded and one of the best-preserved. It is located 65km (40 miles) north of Beijing city and easily reached by public transport.

The surrounding natural scenery can be breath-taking. Woods cover over ninety-six percent of the total scenic area, and flowers bloom all over the mountains in spring. Grasses swathe the hillside in summer. In autumn, the fruit trees are laden and by October, leaves turn red or yellow, touching the mountain tops with gold. In winter, the wall is covered by snow, making it more magnificent.
